The Best Jobs 2020 and Beyond

So I saw a smart video about which are the best jobs.

They are not the ones that just pay the most!

Here are the three criteria to look for in your next dream job (aside from the money):

1) Autonomy – Work that is self-directed provides satisfaction that jobs that are closely or micro-managed do not.

2) Mastery – Jobs that allow you get better at them over time  (technical proficiency) provide a sense of mastery and self-respect.

3) Purpose – When you have a deep sense of purpose and meaning from your work there is simply no greater motivator and satisfier than this.

I’d also add that the best places to work are the ones with:

  • The best bosses and the nicest people
  •
  • A solid balance for work and life

Overall, if we can reconnect the profit motive with the purpose motive then we have truly have the best jobs out there. 😉

Expect Less / Appreciate More

I thought this was a great saying in the Wall Street Journal book review today.

“Expect Less, Appreciate More.”

Many people in their late 30s and early 40s become disillusioned with life.

They have been on the treadmill chasing love, fame, and fortune for so long.

But reality sets in and they don’t get everything they think they have coming to them.

Hence some level of mid-life crisis sets in.

However by the time people reach their 50s, things seem to shift again, and a happiness or peacefulness sets in.

People start to expect less and instead appreciate more from the blessings they do have.

The treadmill becomes a long walk along the beautiful beach or park trail.

We don’t need to chase success, but rather just see the great lives in so many ways that G-d has already bestowed on us.

The U-shaped curve of life–where we start all bright-eyes and bushy tailed in our younger years and which descends into disappointment and disillusionment in mid-life, comes up once again to happiness and a fulfillment in our later years.

Over the course of our lives, we learn that life does not ask, but rather it tells us.

And if we just listen, we can find meaning and contentment amidst it all. 😉

Three Legs of Quality of Life

So this is something that I am learning.

Quality of life means perspective and balance.

When people go to the extreme and focus all their energies on any one area almost to the exclusivity of the others in their life, it usually means they are going wrong.

Some people are “party animals”–life is all about their fun, enjoyment, experiences (and even excessive partying, sleeping around, getting drunk and high), and their very immediate gratification.

Others are all about work–climbing that professional ladder and earning more money, material goods, and more power is the holy grail and also the bane of their existence.

And yet there are some people that are focused on faith, family, and community–they are mothers and fathers, religious students and clergy, community organizers and organizers of charitable events and giving.

The problems is that people need multiple facets of their lives–yes, they need playfulness, interests, activities, hobbies, and fun and joyous times; at the same time, they need intellectual curiosity, professional contribution and achievement, and the wherewithal to be responsible and pay the bills; and very importantly, they need  social, spiritual, and emotional fulfillment from family, friends, giving, and faith.

When a person stands on only one of these legs, like many seem to–they are on wobbly ground and are likely to fall hard and fast.

Even on two legs, something is missing in their lives–they are standing tall, but not strong and stable.

On all three legs, a person can be grounded and able to not just stand for themselves, but able to bear weight like on a stool, and they are can play music and sing and smile, knowing that they have a genuine quality of life that few ever really achieve. 😉

It’s About The People

The older (not that old) that I get, the more I realize that life and success is all about the people.

Whether it’s our families, friends, and colleagues–it’s how we treat people and the relationships we form that count–and that enable us to achieve success together!

Many people just count their money instead of counting their blessings of hearts and souls.

But while we certainly need a certain amount of $$$ to live, we really need ❤ to thrive.

Today, before the Thanksgiving holiday, I just took a little time to walk around and talk with people here, thank them for their good work and friendships, and wish them a good holiday.

It was such a little thing, but honestly I felt so good doing it.

I am thankful for so many things this year, including all the wonderful people in my life who do so much to make my life joyous and fulfilling, but I am also grateful to G-d for continuing to open my eyes to what and who(s) that really count.

Faces of The Metro and The Times

Metro1.JPEGMetro2.JPEGMetro3.jpEgMetro4.JPEG

Do these people look happy and fulfilled or are they looking more vacant, exhausted, and miserable to you?

Is it the Metro?

Is it Washington, D.C.?

Is it their work?

Is it family issues?

Is it the economy?

Is it health problems?

For a superpower country with supposed incredible wealth, might, and freedom to enjoy it all–what the heck is going on.

Should we blame the politics and fighting?

Should we blame the fake news optics?

Should we blame our gnawing adversaries (Axis of Evil Russia, Iran, North Korea…)?

Should we blame materialism and consumerism (and a corresponding lack of spirituality and values in our lives)?

We have the greatest advances in history–revolutionizing energy, transportation, healthcare, communications, and more–so much to advance our well-being, to savor, and seemingly endless more to come.

Why aren’t people smiling?

Why aren’t people jumping for joy more?

Why aren’t people even awake with eyes open to enjoy the life’s journey?

There should be great hope in the future–with fruitful life there is hope and with hope there is excitement and joy–but without hope all is meaningless and lost.

What is going on out there–psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, clergy?

We are trying to do everything right.

So where are we going wrong-wrong-wrong? 😉

And It Will Come To Pass

Daniel.jpeg

I was walking today and this is what was in my mind…

And it will be in the days of Putin king of Russia and Xi Jinping king of China that Trump king of the USA will advance peace between Israel and its neighbors.

So that nation shall not life up sword again nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.

And you will quiet your enemies to the north, and to the southwest, and to the far east.

None shall stand against you.

The time is coming when great arrows will pierce the hearts of your enemies, and the eyes of the people shall see and know that G-d, the protector of Israel and the judge of all, doth live and fulfills all his promises to those that honor their commitments to Him.

The answer is in your words and deeds to bring glory to the Maker of Heaven and Earth.

Sharpen your swords, gird your tongue in prayer, and cover yourselves in the everlasting deeds of your forefathers and mothers.

The time arrives for all mankind to witness the long arm of the L-rd and know his reign and mercy endures forever.

Be of faith and good courage.

And Israel will dwell in peace and security and the world will prosper in the redemption.

The ambers and ash of history are still warm, but the times of evil and destruction shall give way to a renewal of the simple, the good, and the peaceful following.

He who sits on the throne that is the foundation of all that lives gazes upon his creation with a sadness and promise.

Those who commit the worst evils will be found guilty and cleansed, and those of pure heart will be guiltless.

Evil will not stand in the presence of the L-rd of Hosts.

Redemption is at hand and the glorious saving by the spirit that is the spirit that speaks to all with a voice of thunder and lightening, and the angels will be awakened, and man will know and serve Him once more with a full heart and mindfulness to the Almighty.

Blessed be His name and His deeds are magnificent beyond wonder, generosity, and holiness.

Amen, Amen, Amen.

Coupling, The Beauty Of

Couple

So just a couple of birds, right?

Not to me!

There were a number of reminders to me today about how special and fortunate it is for any of us to be with someone we love.

It’s not just that two heads are better than one.

Pretty much, everything is better with a partner who looks back at us and smiles.

We magnify the joy and we share the sorrow, together.

What my dad used to call my mom, his “better half!”

What we are lacking in, often our soulmate can fill in the blank.

And planning and executing is as a team, rather than flying solo.

There is someone who keeps our lofty ideas in check and at the same time challenges us when it’s time to think bigger.

We learn from the other person, at the same time that we teach them maybe a little thing or two from our repertoire.

Strategically, divide and conquer makes everything from routine tasks to complex projects easier to achieve, especially when we agree on the goal and the approach.

Even the “occasional” disagreements and fights helps us to learn to control our temperament and to work things out or when to take a break and think things through afresh.

Someone to reach out to.

Someone to hold unto.

Someone to caress.

Someone to buttress.

Someone who makes us a better person than the one we see in the mirror naked and mortal.

Like 2 by 2 in Noah’s Ark or in the birds and the bees, we are committed to that special someone.

The Bat Kol calls out “so and so shall be married to so and so” like only the L-rd in heaven can decree from the rib of man to the flesh of a women. 😉

United Jerusalem Of Gold, Of Bronze, And Of Light

Israel

We had a beautiful Shabbat service today at Magen David Synagogue.

It was in honor of Yom Yerushalayim, which starts tonight.

The day commemorates the reunification of Holy city of Jerusalem after the 1967 War.

The Rabbi read from Naomi Shemer’s poetic song called, “Jerusalem of Gold.”

And then we all sang the song together…

“Jerusalem of gold, and of bronze, and of light,

Behold I am a violin for all your songs.”

What was amazing to learn was that Naomi Shemer wrote this song in honor of Israel Independence Day (Yom Ha’Azmaut) three weeks before the 1967 War and reunification.

She later added a stanza to turn the song from purely one of the longing for the holy city to one that rejoices in being reunited with it.

Some people from the shule who actually fought in the 1967 War were called up to the bimah, in front of the Torahs, to recite the Psalms and lead us in joyous and moving prayer for the Holy Land of Israel.

After almost 2,000 years of exile, G-d fulfilled his promise to the Jewish people.

As the Prophet Amos said (9:14-15):

“‘I will bring back my exiled people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land that I have given them,’ says the Lord your G-d.”

And as Prophet Ezekiel said (37:10-14) and  (37:21-22)

“Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ Therefore prophesize and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign L-rd says: O my people, I am going to open up your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel….I will put my spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land…”

[Note: Israel was reestablished in 1948 just three years after the end of the Holocaust where six million Jews perished.]

“I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land. I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. There will be one king over all of them, and there will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms.”

We are truly living in miraculous times when the words of the prophets are fulfilled, and there is not only a State of Israel, but a united Jerusalem of gold, of bronze, and of light. 😉

The Not Useless Machine–You!

This machine is hilarious. It is called the “useless machine,” well…because it is utterly useless.

When you push the switch to turn it on, it does only one thing–a lever comes out and hits the switch in the other direction to turn itself off and the lever retracts.

There is another version of this with eight switches (here), called the “advanced useless machine,” and it will turn all switches backed off–however many of the eight are turned on.

Why do we create such mind-numbing inventions?

Because,

– We can.

– It’s funny.

– It goes viral.

On some deeper level, I think we can connect to this idea of uselessness in parts of our mundane life–where we get into a habit, and basically do the same thing day after day–until we ask ourselves, where is the meaning of it all? Is our existence really important? Will anyone ever really care that we were even on this planet (for whatever period of life G-d grants us)?

Like this box, there are people and times when they just wish they could turn themselves off–some attempt it!

But we have to realize that we are given a choice every day to love and care for the ones we are blessed with, to do good selfless acts of kindness, and to try to give something back to the world–however big or small–even if it’s just a useless box that makes people laugh and introspect. 😉

The Nature of Envy and Ambition

Throne

I watched a really good movie the other day called “The Violin.”

It was about a civil war in a South American country where freedom fighters are vastly outnumbered and outgunned and an old violinist tries to smuggle weapons and ammunition to his people in his violin case.

At one point in the movie, their village in overrun by the army, and the boy’s mother and sister are killed.

The little boy asks the grandfather to explain the horrible life events that have befallen them to him and the grandfather tells how G-d created the world with good people as well as people the are envious and ambitious and those people sought to take everything away from the others–no matter how much they accumulated, they wanted more.

I thought about this with respect to a quote I had learned in Yeshiva that “absolute power corrupts absolutely”–that those who have unbridled power and ability, will use it without limitation and in wrong and harmful ways to others, because they can.

Envy and ambition and power–can be used for good–when people see others succeed and are motivated to work hard and do their best too.

But when people become blindly consumed with it for its own sake–they can’t stand anyone having more than them or even having anything–they think they should just as well have it all–then they will not just work hard to achieve it, but they will act out against others to unjustly take what they want and as much as they want.

My father always taught me never to be jeoulous of anyone. He told me that if you knew what really went on in their lives–what their basket [of good and bad] was–you wouldn’t trade places with them in a million years.

And I believe he was right. Often when I know someone only superficially and their life looks so grand and “perfect,” it is tempting to think they have it all or even just better, but then when you get to know their life challenges–sickness, abuse, death, loneliness, and other hardships–you realize how things could always be a lot worse and how truly lucky you are.

Of course, there will there always be people who are superficial, materialistic, and can’t control their urge for power and things–and they will try to take more than their fair due and by force if necessary. In the end, will it bring them real fulfillment and happiness, the answer is obvious.

I believe it was my Oma (grandmother), a survivor of The Holocaust, who used to say “count your blessings”–she was right. 😉
