The Commandments are for All of Us

Please see my new article in The Times of Israel called “The Commandments are for All of Us.”

While some Jews certainly thrive in Yeshiva delving into the Talmudic understanding of the laws for long hours every day, and they serve an important role in understanding and transmitting the laws from generation to generation, others may be more interested in the fundamental philosophy of Judaism and in “doing what’s right” by applying the core teachings of the Torah at their own levels every day. Maybe this is one reason that the Ten Commandments are presented separately from the “mishpatim” that follow. Not that they aren’t both important and necessary, but that the Torah is for all of us in the ways that each of us can appreciate, learn, and apply them within the overall framework of the Torah.

Of course, all the commandments are important between G-d and man and between man and man, as well as the conceptual framework of the Ten Commandments and the details embedded in the rest of the 613 commandments. Yet certainly, all of us in one way or another struggle with some commandments more than others or with losing sight of either the high-level essence of the Torah or important details of implementation. Nevertheless, we must strive to not only appreciate that all the Torah comes from Hashem, but also that we each must work as best as we can, in our own capacities, to learn and fulfill G-d’s laws and to be a good example and “light unto the nations,” which is what being “the chosen people” is really all about.

Shopping Vs Psychiatrist

This sign had a pretty good point:

“Shopping is cheaper than a psychiatrist.”

Plus it’s more fun and you get to take the junk home that you buy.

For many, shopping truly is a form of mental/stress relief–almost like medicine.

Unfortunately, if you think about it, things don’t really make a person happy…rather people do and doing good does.

But industry wants you to think a lot more superficially and materialistically than that.

Hence the notion that if you take your daily dose of shopping, maybe you can skip the shrink! 😉

Impact of Hyperwork on Family

I am seeing this all the time now…

Parents of little children, or even older children, who are too busy working to pay much, if any, attention to their families.

Call it a disease of the industrial revolution + information technology.

Whether people worked on the assembly line making widgets or nowadays on the computer and smartphone answering their bosses and colleagues compulsively–it’s become a global obsession.

On one hand, with the impending robot and AI revolution taking over jobs, people need to be grateful to even have a job to earn a living for the families.

On the other hand, with the connections to each other and our work 24/7, the depression-era saying of:

Brother, can you spare a dime?

Has morphed into:

Brother, can you spare some time?

Yes, we all need to be responsible adults, earn a decent living and pay our bills.

But in the end, it’s not money or things that we give to our families that is the most important.

I would argue money and things are the least important, and what is truly most precious is the love, time, and attention you give to yours.

As the old saying goes:

Money can’t buy love.

But time and attention given to your loved ones can build meaningful relationships that last a lifetime and beyond.

Yes, of course, people need to work to earn a living and productively contribute something to society, but it is also true that work is used as an excuse to run away from parental and familial responsibilities.

It’s easier to give an Amazon gift certificate or a Gameboy then to actually spend the afternoon with the kids.

These days, people say ridiculous things like:

I love going into the office to get away from home.

But you can’t run away from your problems at home–you need to work on them and solve them.

The diabolical murderous Nazis used work as a tool to enslave, torture, and exterminate their victims as the sign over the gate of the Auschwitz (and many other) concentration camps read:

Arbeit Macht Frei  (or Work Sets You Free)

But as we all know inside, true freedom is being able to give generously from your time and effort to your loved ones, and slavery is not being able to let go of your work.

What’s The Big Fascination?

From Victoria’s Secret to colorful art renditions, medieval metal, and cross-dressing on the neighborhood corner…

This does not seem to be about being angels, unchaste, or even “sexy-wexy “(as I think my mother-in-law calls it).

So I really have to ask what is all the fascination about here?

Culturally, we seem to be a little OCD.

If Martians visited us, I don’t think they would understand us at all.

Frankly, I’m not sure that I do either!  😉

Today Is 6/13

613.jpeg

So today is 6/13.

Yes, check your calendar.

It only comes once a year.

613 is the mystical and holy number of commandments in the Torah.

For more than 2 years (this is not a short-term phenomenon), my family and even some friends have been seeing an inexplicable number of 613 everywhere.

Here is one from a stock I follow from the other week: Twitter was up exactly 6.13%…and I don’t follow that many stocks.

Just yesterday, another stock (that been doing terribly…it’s a startup!) is down an enormous 61.3% since I started following it.

And yet another major stock–of the largest company in Israel and the largest generic pharmaceutical company in the world–Teva–is down 16.03 year-to-date.

Nearly every day, we see an endless barrage of license plates, roads, train and plane schedules and physical or URL addresses, get purchase receipts or invoice totals, see number of posts, views, likes, or emails, and even the other day almost booked a hotel with the address….that’s right and only 613!

I am a rational person…maybe almost to the extreme, and what I initially laughed off as a lark or someone’s OCD thing, is beyond any reasonable explanation that I can fathom at this point.

I am left with faith that there is truly some message being sent from the One Above…the question is what is the meaning of the message?

I continue to hope and pray that the message is one of blessings and redemption for mankind…I hope you will join me in this prayer. 😉
