PTSD Gets Around

Please see my new article in The Times of Israel called, “PTSD Gets Around.”

The Jewish people are a nation recovering from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), where memories of trauma flood our national psyche and can trigger emotional (and even physical) symptoms. Whether fear of the next “evil decree” against the Jews, to another pogrom of crazed rapists and killers rampaging through a Jewish town, or even of genocide itself, the Jewish people have known plenty of deep-seated persecution and have to deal with the accompanying fear and anxiety of being the quintessential “strangers in a strange land,” almost everywhere in the world and over a very long period of history.

PTSD is very real not only for our suffering veterans, and for individual people that have been sexually abused or experienced physical violence, but it can also be a national psychiatric disorder based on collective trauma that affects our mood, anxiety levels, and behavioral reactions to events. Suffering from exile, persecution, and helplessness from thousands of years does not go away in a generation or even a century. It is a long road for our national recovery where we can learn to once again live healthy and productive lives absent from the fear and anxiety of another bad Tisha B’Av.

The Only Fixer

Please see my new article in The Times of Israel called, “The Only Fixer.”

I’m reading the famous book, The Fixer by Bernard Malamud. It’s about the horrible pogroms in Russia and the blood libels where the Jews would be ridiculously accused of sorcery and witchcraft, and the killing of Christian children for their blood to put in Passover matzah!

In short, hate and hurt can’t be excused because you can. Wielding power gives you authority, but also the extra responsibility. There is such a thing as acting justly. And then there isn’t. Usually, when someone is acting justly, they can explain themselves in a balanced, calm, and rationale way. It makes sense! When they are doing wrong, it’s usually extreme, abrupt, and ultimately inexplicable and therefore can’t be articulated. Hence, that’s the way it is, Fixer. Who is The Fixer? Again, I don’t care!

Josep Borrell: A History Of Anti-Semitism

Josep Borrell, the disgraceful High Representative of the European Union strikes once again with his extreme anti-Semitism.

Borrell has threatened Israel that if they follow the United States’ Middle East Peace Plan that includes annexing 30% of the West Bank then “it could not pass unchallenged,” even though:

  • It is part of the Biblical promised land.
  • Israel won it in a war of self-defense against multiple attacking Arab armies in 1967.
  • It is recognized as absolutely strategically necessary to Israel’s peace and security.

Understanding that this is not an isolated incident, Borrell has an anti-Israel and pro-Iranian track record that includes his stating:

Iran wants to wipe out Israel; nothing new about that. You have to live with it.

Borrell’s Jew hate apparently goes all the way back to when he was a child and participated in a sickening pogrom in the 1950s where he yelled “To Kill Jews.”

Can you imagine that this is who the European Union selects to be their High Representative AND what does this say about the EU after all the atrocities they committed against the Jews: the Holocaust, Spanish Inquisition, Crusades, expulsions and pogroms?

The EU should very publicly dump this anti-Semite Borrell and place him in the trash bin of history where this type of disgusting behavior and hateful sentiment belongs.  😉

A Vision of Jewish Strength

Please see my new article in The Times of Israel called, “A Vision of Jewish Strength.”

With the rebirth of the State of Israel came the rebirth of the Jew. No longer the Jew cowering in the face of pogroms, Inquisition, Crusades, persecution, expulsions, and the Holocaust. The new Jew, as epitomized by the brave men and women of IDF, would be remade in the image of Moses who led the Jews out of Egyptian slavery, and King David who vanquished our enemies in our land, as well as the Jews of Purim and Hanukah, who fought ever so valiantly and to victory against the great empires of Persia and Greece or for us, whoever rises against us as the modern day equivalent.

But as important to the new Jew as our physical survival is that of our spiritual wellbeing. The persecution of Jews over thousands of years was not just a physical attack, as horrible as it was, but also a spiritual, religious, and cultural one, where Jews were prohibited from learning Torah, worshiping, and practicing as Jews. Thus, the second point of criticality in having the State of Israel is that it provides for Jewish sovereignty and ensures “the Jew as actor, determiner of his or her own destiny.” The Jewish people to truly thrive must be able to express themselves through their own language and history, religiously and culturally, and practically through their own leadership and decision-making to forge their own future.

‘Uncut Gems’ Cuts Deep

Please see my new article in The Times of Israel called, “Uncut Gems Cuts Deep.”

Yesterday, we went to see the new Adam Sandler movie, Uncut Gems….Ratner’s life is full of shlemazel of his own making. While he has a good wife, kids, and extended family (maybe with the exception of his loan shark uncle), a fancy-schmancy home in the suburbs with a newly renovated pool, his own jewelry business that even caters to some big-league sports players, and a shiksa girlfriend on the side (who seems to love him), Ratner is never satisfied or happy and is always pushing for more!

In the movie, Howard Ratner was driven by greed and made bad life choices, and to me, it was a shame that the he was portrayed as a Jew, which can feed the vicious cycle of discrimination and hatred that has often been anchored around money. With the vicious machete attack on Chanukah at a Rabbi’s house in Monsey this week (after a slew of other anti-Semitic incidents, including an attack on a student for wearing a yalmulke on the NYC Subway to beatings and tire slashings of Jews in Brooklyn), we are reminded that there is once again a resurgence of prejudice and hate against Jews, but also that it’s the light of Chanukah that “drives out the darkness,” and that money and materialism are a mere shabby substitute to finding true security and success whether you work in the dense NYC Diamond District or live in the sprawling suburbs of America.

Righting Wrongs To Sephardim

Please see my new article in The Times of Israel called, “Righting Wrongs To Sephardim.”

The initial waves of Aliyah beginning in 1882 were driven by the persecution and pogroms, and later the Holocaust, in Europe. Thus, Israeli society initially built up their institutions and power centers around these Ashkenazi pioneers. Immediately after 1948, when Sephardic refugees were expelled from the Arab countries en masse, Israel was overwhelmed with as immigration influx that virtually doubled the Jewish population in Israel in the first three years of its existence. Unfortunately, the newly arrived Sephardim were relegated to a substandard housing and economic situation, which then persisted for many decades.

In Jewish society, however, there is no room for ethnic discrimination and inequality, and the formation of a Sephardic political party in 1984 was a crucial milestone in Jewish social and economic justice. For almost 30 years, Shas was led by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the former Israel Chief Sephardic Rabbi and spiritual leader, and Shas has remained one of Israel’s top political parties.

Blood Libels Unabated

Please see my new article in The Times of Israel, called “The Jews Control It.”

Unfortunately, the anti-Semites continue their refrain of “The Jews control the world” from Wall Street to Main Street to K Street.

But what they are completely missing are the true secrets of Jewish creativity and thought.

I hope you will read the article to learn about Jewish values and our faith. 😉

Controlling The World, Really?

So, unfortunately, there is a lot of discrimination and hate out there.

Often, I see, hear, or read lots of anti-Semitism.

People don’t like what I write in my blog, that I eat Kosher, Keep Shabbat, or that I wear a head covering or whatever.

I get things like “Dirty Jew!”

Sometimes, “Get out! Go back to Israel!”

Or when I try to express myself, “Uh, the Jews control the world,”

The funny thing is if Jews control the world, why do I feel like I don’t control anything!

I feel so small and insignificant in a way in the realm of G-d’s great universe.

Where I am but a speck of dust.

I see tall skyscrapers.

Huge mountain ranges.

The deep oceans.

The rolling plains.

The infinite stars in the sky.

I see a world with hundreds of countries.

And billions of people.

And I see me, and I am just a person.

And I see the Jewish people–a tiny minority.

One that has been subject of pogroms, inquisitions, exiles, destruction, and genocide–over and over again.

I grew up pretty poor and watching my parents work so hard trying their best to support the family.

I think Jews don’t control the world.

I certainly don’t think I control even my day.

The reality is only G-d is in control.

And for that, I am most humble and grateful to the L-rd above. 😉

A Very Dirty Swiss Hotel

Anti-Semitic Hotel.jpeg

This was one of the anti-Semitic signs posted at the Aparthaus Paradies hotel in Switzerland:

“To our Jewish Guests
Women, Men and Children
Please take a shower before you go swimming and although after swimming.
If you break the rules, I’m forced to close the swimming pool to you.
Thank you for understanding: Ruth Thomann”

Wow, more blatant anti-Semitism in Europe.

What a darn shame that after only 72 years since Hitler (may his evil name be erased) that this disgusting hatred of Jews rears its ugly head again.

– What killing 6,000,000 Jews in the Holocaust wasn’t enough for you???

– Or maybe you preferred the blood libels, pogroms, Crusades, Spanish Inquisition, auto-da-fe, and expulsions of Jews???

Good people of Europe and their elected governments: Please speak out and shut down this sick, hateful hotel establishment.

Do you believe in G-d?  Do you think he’s watching what you do now?

Europe and the rest of the world–wake up and cure what ails you–it’s not the Jews, but the evil in your bigoted hearts.

Racism–From Our Campuses to the United Nations

Boxing.jpeg

So racism is so still alive and disgusting in the world today.

Just this week…

– Students at a major local university here in Washington, D.C. hang bananas from nooses targeting blacks on campus for the 2nd time this school year.  And today, students rally to plead for an investigation and intervention.

– As every U.S. senator has agreed, the Unjust United Nations continues its institutionalized Anti-semitism and unfair targeting of democratic ally, Israel, labeling them an Apartheid state, pushing a grotesque boycott, divestment, and sanction regime, denying Israel’s claim to it’s ancient and modern day capital of Jerusalem, and falsely targeting them–truly one of the most progressive states in the entire world–as a human rights violator.

Bias, bigotry, prejudice, racism, anti-semitism, hatred, and discrimination–it’s all still around us.

Whether your Jewish or Black or Indian or Asian or LGBT or whatever–it’s open season from lynching bananas with references to gorillas to targeting the Jewish State with everything from murder to economic terrorism and so on.

Why people want to smash the living daylights out of others and call themselves righteous doing it is beyond a mystery and speaks more to the truth of what’s genuinely evil in the hearts of mankind. 😉
