Not Caring or Worse

It’s interesting…

There are a lot of good people out there, but there are probably more in your orbit that simply don’t care or worse.

You can have this problem or that.

If they even “give you the time of day,” people will nod, tell you how sorry they are, and probably relate some of their own misery.

The good people try to see if and how they may be able to help.

The others really don’t want to know, certainly don’t care, and just see you as baggage in the way.

But everyone has their problems!

If only people could look with compassion on each other.

We all struggle with our demons in this world.

Of course, we can’t let troubles get in the way of our doing what we need to do.

But people can make all the difference in just providing a compassionate ear and being willing to open themselves up to understanding others and helping each other or making reasonable accommodations so people can help themselves.

Listen, we all have our day–wouldn’t it be nice to be that person who is kind and generous to others and have others treat us that way too.

Moses’ Handicap

Please see new my new article in The Times of Israel called, “Moses’s Handicap.”

In truth, we are all handicapped in one way or another. One person comes from a meager financial background, another has no education, and yet another has any of a host of physical, mental, or emotional challenges. Essentially, we all have something that rightfully can hold us back. But still G-d chooses us to do His bidding. Whether it’s leading the Jews out of Egypt or standing up and doing what’s right in situations that we are confronted with every day, we are asked to go beyond our handicap.

We can’t let our handicaps prevent us from fulfilling our purpose in life–we need to meet the challenges head on with G-d’s help.  😉

Watch Out For That Gopher Hole

So this was funny this week.

I hurt my back and leg and am going around with a (little) limp.

So one of my colleagues at work sees me struggling-limping down the long hall here, and they say to me this funny thing:

Did you fall in a gopher hole?

I had to take an aback because I never heard that phrase before.

Working outside the city here though, where a lot of people live in the burbs, and we regularly see all sorts of animals around campus, perhaps it wasn’t so outlandish a question.

Anyway, as I’m limping, I can’t get that funny image out of my head.

I wonder if other people have fallen in a gopher hole and that’s why back problems are so common after all. 😉

Things Still Happen

Skull.jpeg

So I know that I’m stating the obvious, but still I can’t help but reflect…

No matter how successful people are, things—bad things—still unfortunately happen.

This weekend, I read about how tragedy struck Uber’s founder and CEO—of a $70 billion company–and he lost his mother in a freak boating accident.

A few years back, Facebook’s, powerful Chief Operating Officer and billionaire lost her husband on a treadmill in a hotel.

Other famous people, like superstar icon, Michael Jackson, died at a young age from an overdose.

Life events can G-d forbid overtake us suddenly and with devastating impact.

It’s scary, and it just never seems to end (B’AH).

No matter who you are or how rich and powerful, G-d is the most powerful.

While we can control only what we can control, there is no escape from ultimate fate that awaits when it is so decreed by the One Above—it should all be in His ever-bounding mercy. 😉

Conflicts That Challenge Us

Woman

My wife told me something good today (first time ever, haha).

There are three types of conflicts:

1) Between Man and Himself — these are our internal conflicts or demons (fears, anxieties, guilt, compulsions, and evil impulses) that we must conquer.

2) Between Man and Man — these are conflicts we have with others and we must resolve them with either empathy, compromise, giving, and forgiveness or at the other end of the spectrum with fight or flight.

3) Between Man and His Environment — these are conflicts that are man-made or natural in our surroundings and may involve scarcity, harsh or destructive conditions, and obstacles to overcome with scientific and engineering problem-solving.

I would add a 4th type of conflict:

4) Between Man and G-d — these are conflicts we have in trying to understand why we are here, what G-d wants from us, and “why bad things happen,” and involve our relationship and reconciliation with and service to our maker.

Basically, these four conflicts are more than enough to keep us busy day-in and -out for our entire lifetime, and either we resolve them and go to the afterworld, or perhaps we have to come back to do some more work on resolving them again. 😉

A Prayer Of Thanks

Thank You
My sister-in-law sent over this beautiful prayer.

It is a prayer of thanks to the Almighty.

We thank G-d for:

Being with us and supporting us with his loving kindness.

– Challenges that teach us, help us appreciate all that we have, and are ultimately for our benefit.

– The wonderful life bestowed upon us and for always listening to to our prayers.

If we concentrate on all that we have and not on what we don’t and recognize that everything G-d does is ultimately for the good, then we can gain strength, persist, and reach ever new heights!

Hope you find hope and strength in this too. 😉

(Special thanks to Sarah Herbsman for sharing this beautiful prayer.)
