The Dark Side

Thought this was a fascinating piece in the Wall Street Journal’s Review Section called, “The Dark Triad and The Evolution of Jerks.”

Antisocial Personality Disorder is where people exhibit three primary symptoms:

1) Narcissism – Excessive focus on oneself.

2) Machiavellianism – Manipulating others for one’s own gain.

3) Psychopathy – Overall disregard for others, including impaired empathy and remorse

Together, these 3 traits make up “The Dark Triad” or perhaps they  come across as being from the dark side, because of how badly they can treat others.

Studies have shown that these three traits are positively correlated with one another, and that more than 10% of the population has these.

In reading a little more online at WebMD, I learned that the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath is that while they share similar traits, a psychopath typically acts as if they have no conscience, while a sociopath acts with a weak conscience.

“At worst, they’re cold, calculating killers,” while at the less extreme, they may be okay with hurting others to get what they want.

– Moreover, while psychopaths are more cold-hearted and calculating,” sociopaths are “hot-headed” and “act without thinking how others will be affected.”

Another study found that people with these traits often “experienced low-quality or irregular parental care.” Thus a harsh or unstable childhood may cause these symptoms.

Whether these people come from the dark side, are going to the dark side, or just are scary and hurtful, it is important to be able to recognize who you may be dealing with.

The Good Eggs

So I’ve learned it’s not all about the money and the title.

What is the most important is being around good, decent people.

I’ve always heard that your relationships are most important.

But it’s not just relationships, it’s also who you are relating to.

There are good eggs, and there are not such good eggs.

Don’t get fooled by what’s on the eggshell–that is certainly no yolk.

Most of eggs know who and what they are.

Some eggs like to scramble the others.

Some eggs like to poach on the others.

Some eggs like to crack the others’ shells.

But then there are other eggs that like it over easy with the other eggs.

They all want to get the meal cooked and have it tasty and nutritious, but some eggs just don’t know how to treat others eggs with decency, respect, and integrity.

It’s best to be around those eggcelent eggs, and that is where the best happens and the good eggs gravitate to.

Be careful what eggs you associate with, because there is nothing that smells worse than a rotten egg. 😉

Good People And Bad

So what is one of the hardest lessons in life to learn?

There are really good and holy people out there, but there are also truly bad and evil ones.

It’s not such a difficult concept, except if you just don’t think that way.

I think some of us just want to believe that at the heart of it all, people are fundamentally good–or at the very least they struggle in order to fight off the evil impulse.

They are created by G-d.

They have parents and families.

They have challenges and disappointments.

They have a good soul.

Or do they?

Perhaps like everything in life–G-d created everything and it’s opposite.

– There is life and death.

– There is light and dark.

– There is cold and hot.

– There is land and water.

– There is male and female.

– There is pleasure and pain.

– There is work and rest.

– There is holy and profane.

Everything has it’s counterpart.

– In this respect then, there are good people and there are bad.

Not that there aren’t people who are both–they do some good things and some bad.

Just like with everything, you can have greys or mixtures–some of this AND some of that.

But still, G-d created everything and its opposite.

– Again, there is heaven and hell.

And yes, there are some people that are perhaps truly good and others that are very bad.

The really good ones–they are holy, they give, they love, they inspire.

The really bad ones–they are vicious devil wolves.

That doesn’t mean anyone is completely perfect or imperfect, but as with everything, there are people as there are inanimate objects that function at the extremes.

Most of us don’t live in the extreme, yet we do see those that we know are examples of each:

We recognize the best and these are people with a heart of gold and a soul that shines light, love, and gives to others.

Similarly, the worst ones are with a heart that is selfish and greedy and a soul that is dark, hateful. and violent.

We don’t like to think of the extremes.

They either are too perfect or too frighteningly evil, but yet they do exist and we know it just as we know life and death, light and dark, cold and hot, land and water, male and female, pleasure and pain, work and rest, holy and profane, and even the destinations of heaven and hell. 😉
